Introductory note
“DO NOT GO THE WALKING WAY. INSTEAD, GO WHERE THERE IS NO ROAD AND LEAVE A TRACE ”

History
The Center for Vascular Diseases of the Brain, as a special organizational unit within the ICVD “Dedinje”, officially started working in June, 2021. In the process of expanding its scope of work, for the first time in 44 years of existence, the Institute “Dedinje” introduced interventional neuroradiology procedures and thus provided its patients with the most modern diagnostic and therapeutic approach when it comes to cerebrovascular diseases. The leader of the team for interventional neuroradiological procedures is the Chief of Medicine dr. sci. med. Slobodan Ćulafić, our excellent neurologist who inaugurated this method in other centers in the country and the region.
Scope of work
nterventional neuroradiology procedures are among the minimally invasive techniques since a small incision in the skin provides access through blood vessels (endovascular), to the pathological changes (aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, vascular stenosis, tumor, etc.) in the central nervous system, region of the head, neck or spine, where special materials are used to treat the change. Endovascular treatment is performed under local anesthesia, with the exception of patients who are not able to cooperate (bleeding in the brain, ruptured aneurysm, acute cerebral infarction).
Advantages of endovascular treatment:
- Minimally invasive approach
- shorter duration of the intervention
- faster recovery
- shorter hospital treatment, 48 hours on the average
- return to daily activities within 5 days.
Digital subtraction angiography is performed – DSA of the affected region of the body is performed prior to each endovascular treatment.
Organizational structure
The center for vascular diseases of the brain consists of the following units:
- outpatient unit for interventional neuroradiology
- semi-intensive and intensive care unit
- operating block-angio room for interventional neurovascular therapy and diagnostics
List of procedures
Indications for procedures performed at the Center for Vascular Diseases of the Brain:
- cerebral aneurysms
- arteriovenous malformations of the brain and spinal cord
- carotid-cavernous fistulas
- arteriovenous fistulas of the head and neck
- preoperative embolization of meningioma, glomus tumor, juvenile nasopharyngeal tumor
- embolization of hypervascularized head and neck tumors
- acute stroke
- carotid blood vessel stenosis
- cerebral blood vessel stenosis
- dissections of blood vessels of the neck and brain
Most significant results
In the Center for Vascular Diseases of the Brain, in one year of work, five hundred interventions were performed on the blood vessels of the brain and spinal cord. In our Center, for the first time in the country and the region, a mechanical thrombus extraction was performed on a patient who was implanted with an LVAD pump – which is used in patients with terminal heart failure.
