Work at the Department
Cardiac surgery procedures have been performed for years through an incision made in the middle of the sternum. In the last twenty years, the trend of less severe surgical trauma during cardiac surgery procedures has developed, which is now called minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
Minimally invasive cardiac surgery is open heart surgery performed through incisions of reduced size, which results in less severe trauma, faster recovery of patients and significant aesthetic effect. A prerequisite for minimally invasive cardiac surgery procedures is ensuring the same level of patient’s safety and the same quality of cardiac intervention as in case of standard approach.
The basis of the success of these interventions lies in the extensive experience of the operator in the field of cardiac surgery and adequate selection of patients. If the cardiac pathology and the general condition of the patient allow the use of minimally invasive approaches, then this is the optimal cardiac surgery option. ICVD “DEDINJE” launched this program in 2011 with the first endoscopic heart surgery in Serbia. Over time, due to the increase in the number of procedures of this kind, there was a need to develop a separate center within the Clinic for Cardiac Surgery of the ICVD “DEDINJE”. The Center for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery of the ICVD “DEDINJE” is dedicated to developing and implementation of minimally invasive interventions as well as educating local and foreign medical doctors in both areas.
